You can use Real Cookie Banner on websites with multiple languages. We support WPML and Polylang as well as TranslatePress and Weglot as multi-language plugins. We will show you how to set up Real Cookie Banner for multiple languages in WPML/Polylang and what settings you can edit per language.
If you have installed Real Cookie Banner after WPML or Polylang in your WordPress, all steps to initialize all existing languages have been done automatically. If you install WPML or Polylang into an existing website that already uses Real Cookie Banner, you should deactivate Real Cookie Banner briefly and then reactivate it to initialize the plugin for all languages. It’s that simple!
Settings
You can specify settings for the features and behavior of your cookie banner under the Settings tab in Real Cookie Banner. You can change the settings no matter in which language you are currently using your WordPress backend. These settings are always applied to all languages.
Services and Content Blocker
Newly created services and content blockers are always created for all languages of your website. If translations exist, they will be used automatically. Otherwise, the text in English will be inserted into the service or content blocker as default value.
Text information like Name, Provider, Purpose, Description or Privacy policy of the provider depend on the backend language you use to edit the service or content blocker. To change the language, you can select the backend language in the admin bar as usual thanks to WPML/Polylang. All technical details, including Status and Group (only in services), are applied to all languages. You can customize the details in any backend language, and they will be applied to any language of your website.
If you delete a service or content blocker in one language, it will not be automatically deleted for the other languages. This way you should have the possibility to use servives and content blockers only for a certain language.
In the WordPress Customizer you can change the appearance of the cookie banner. All texts you can change will be changed for the current backend language. To change the language, you can select the backend language in the admin bar as usual thanks to WPML/Polylang (only outside the WordPress Customizer the admin bar is shown). All other settings apply to all languages. So, again it doesn’t matter in which backend language you change the settings.
I can’t find any texts in the String Translations?
Many plugins use so-called String Translations for WPML or String Translations for Polylang. We don’t use them, so you won’t find any of the translated texts in the respective feature of your multilingual plugin. The reason for this conscious decision is that at the time of writing this article, WPML unfortunately does not offer full support for the WordPress Customizer and thus parts of the comfort offered by Real Cookie Banner would not be implementable with String Translations.
You could learn how to edit the texts in the previous sections.
